How can I prepare myself for marriage?

Question: "How can I prepare myself for marriage?"

The way to Biblically prepare oneself for marriage is the same as what one would do to prepare for any life endeavor. It is principle that should govern all aspects of our lives as born again believers. That principle is; "...Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind" (Matthew 22:37).

This is not a flippant command. It is the centerpiece of our lives as believers. It is choosing to focus upon God and upon His Word with our whole heart so that our soul and our mind are occupied with the things that will please God first. The relationship that we have with God through the LORD Jesus Christ is the factor that puts all other relationships into perspective. The very marriage relationship is based upon the model of Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:22-33). Every aspect of our lives is governed by our commitment as believers to walk and to live according to "thus saith the LORD." Our obedience to God and to His Word give us the equipment we need to fulfill our God given and God ordained role in our marriage and indeed in our role in the world. And the role of every born again believer is to glorify God in all things (1 Corinthians 10:31).

So then my answer to you is that in order to prepare yourself for marriage, walk worthy of your calling in Christ Jesus become intimate with God through His Word. Focus upon obedience in all things. There is no easy ABC to learn to walk in obedience to God. It is a choice every day to leave aside worldly viewpoints and choose instead to follow Godís viewpoint. Walking worthy of Christ is to submit ones self in humility to the only Way, the only Truth and the only Life on a day-by-day, moment-by-moment basis. That is the preparation every believer needs to prepare for this great gift we call life.

A person who is spiritually mature and walking with God is more prepared for marriage than anyone else. Marriage demands commitment, passion, humility, love, and respect. This traits are most evident in a person who has an intimate relationship with God. As you prepare yourself for marriage, focus on allowing God to shape you and mold you into the man or woman He wants you to be. If you submit yourself to Him, He will enable you to be ready for marriage when that wonderful day comes!
